4 prints of birds of prey eggs by Hewitson 1856
These hand-coloured engravings of the eggs of birds of prey are from the Coloured Illustrations of the Eggs of British Birds accompanied with descriptions of the Eggs and Nests by William C Hewitson, published by Jan Van Voorst, London, 1856.
The prints show the eggs of: Spotted Eagle or Aquila Naevia; Osprey or Pandion Hallaeetus; Iceland or Falcon or Falco Islandicus; Peregrine Falcon or Falco Peregrinus.
William Chapman Hewitson was a British naturalist, born on 9 January 1806 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A wealthy collector, Hewitson was particularly devoted to the Coleoptera and the Lepidoptera and also to bird’s nests and eggs. He was also an accomplished scientific illustrator.
