Engraving by FP Nodder from Flora Rustica 1792
This hand-coloured engraving of Briza media – Middle quaking-grass by Frederick P. Nodder is from Flora Rustica: Exhibiting Accurate Figures of such Plants as are either Useful or Injurious in Husbandry by Thomas Martyn. Published by FP Nodder, London 1792.
Martyn (1735-1825) was a botanist and one of the earliest British exponents of Linneaus.
Frederick Polydore Nodder (1770-1801) was an English illustrator, engraver, painter, and publisher. Nodder illustrated and published George Shaw’s periodical, The Naturalist’s Miscellany and Thomas Martyn’s Flora Rustica.
This delicate hand-coloured botanical image has been engraved on handmade paper and is beautifully detailed. The accompanying text is also available.
