Translated as: Novus Atlas is a description of the world with beautiful new detailed country plates engraved in copper and published by Guil and Johannem Blaeu.
This title page is from the German edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum is considered the first modern atlas and is based on the work of Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) and was published for the first time on May 20, 1570, in Antwerp (Belgium). In 1629 Willem Blaeu expanded his map holdings with the purchase of the plates used by Abraham Ortelius for the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. In subsequent years, the Blaeu family continued to edit the work of Abraham Ortelius under a similar title, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum sive Atlas Novus. Later, this atlas in its multiple editions and expansions by the Blaeu family has come to be called Atlas Novus or generally Atlas Maior.
