Auction house commission:

This engraving of Le Coq De Roche Du Perou or Andean Cock of the Rock ( Rupicola peruvianus), also known as Tunki (Quechua) is after the drawing of Jacques Barraband, printed in colour and enhanced by hand. This print is from Histoire naturelle des oiseaux de paradis et des rolliers, suivie de celle des toucans et des barbus (Natural history of birds of paradise and rollers, followed by that of toucans and barbets) by Francois Levaillant and published in Paris by Denne and Perlet 1801-06. Jacques Barraband was one of the best natural history artists of his time and illustrated numerous ornithological works. The half-title indicates that the figure in this work was drawn from nature by Barraband and engraved by Gremilliet, and printed in colour by Langlois and Rousset. Francois Levaillant (1753-1824) was a naturalist, the son of the French consul to Dutch Guyana.
