Babylonie en Balsara van Aleppo by Van Der Aa 1706
Babylonie en Balsara van Aleppo tot in Pegu Bereyet, map depicting the Red Sea, the Malay Peninsula and centred on the Indian Ocean, from Van der Aa’s edition of the travel accounts of the Venetian jeweller Gasparo Balbi. Leiden 1706. The map has a decorative vignette, is engraved on laid paper and is un-coloured. Balbi sailed from Aleppo in 1579, around the coast of India to Burma (Myanmar) in the Gulf of Martalban. The map shows his route; it took him four years to reach Burma. The decorative cartouche depicts his meeting with the king of the region. Size: 6.5in x 9.25in (16.5cm x 23.5cm)
