Travies
These original hand-coloured steel engravings are from The Complete Works of Buffon, with extracts from Daubenton, and the classification of Cuvier. Published by Furne et Cie, Paris 1839.
Georges-Louis Le Clerc, Comte de Buffon was a French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon’s views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. The hand-coloured plates, heightened with gum arabic, were engraved by Manceau, Fournier, Pardinel after original drawings by Edouard Travies. The precision of Edouard Travies’ work, places him with the best of France’s scientific artists and his bird drawings are considered to be some of the finest ever produced.
