These hand-coloured engravings of Humming Birds are from The Natural History of Humming Birds of The Naturalist’s Library by Sir William Jardine, Bart and engraved by WH Lizars, Edinburgh 1833. These engraving are from the first edition.

The humming birds illustrated are Double Crested Hummingbird – male and female, Evening Hummingbird & Sapphire Throated Hummingbird.

Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist’s Library (1833-1843).The Natural History of Humming Birds was issued in two parts, being Volumes VI & VII of The Naturalist?s Library series. Many of the hummingbirds illustrated in this work were of life size.

Each print measures approximately 4in x 6.5in (10cm x 15.5cm)
