George Washington Bacon was born in USA in 1830 and after moving to London, he acquired Edward Weller’s English county steel plates as a means to establish his map publishing business. Bacon published the New Large-Scale Ordnance Atlas of the British Isles in 1882. Over the next 20 years he became known as a prolific publisher of late-Victorian atlases of the British Isles, of London, and of the World, in many editions.
