Silver-washed Fritillary et al by Humphreys 1841
This original hand-coloured lithograph arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood, is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, published in London 1841.
The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:
1. Argynnis Paphia, male (the silver-washed Fritillary Butterfly). 2. The female. 3. Showing the under side.4. The Caterpillar. 5. The Chrysalis. 6. Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
