High brown Fritillary et al by Humphreys 1841
This original hand-coloured lithograph arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood, is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, published in London 1841.
The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:
1. Argynnis Adippe, female (the high brown Fritillary Butterfly). 2. Showing the under side. 3. The Caterpillar. 4. Argynnis Lathonia (the Queen of Spain Fritillary B.). 5. Showing the underside. 6. The Caterpillar. 7. The Chrysalis. 9. Anchusa officinalis (the Alkanet). 10. Onobrychis sativus (the Common Sainfoin)
Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
