This original hand-coloured lithograph arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood, is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, published in London 1841.

The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:

1. Argynnis Charlotta (a variety of A. Aglaia). 2. Showing the under side. 3. Argynnis Paphia (a beautiful female variety). 4. Argynnis Aphrodite. 5. Showing the under side. 6. Viola lutea (the wild yellow heart’s-ease).

Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
