Red Admiral & others by Humphreys 1841
This original hand-coloured lithograph arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood, is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, published in London 1841.
The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:
1. Vanessa Atalanta (the Red Admiral Butterfly). 2. Showing the under side. 3. The Caterpillar. 4. The Chrysalis. 5. Cynthia Huntera. 6. Showing the under side. 7. Cynthia Cardui. 8. Showing the under side. 9. The Caterpillar. 10. The Chrysalis. 11 & 12. Urtica dioica (the Stinging Nettle), 13. Cnicus lanccolatus (the Spear-plum Thistle).
Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
Size: 8.25in x 10.5in (21cm x 26.6cm).
