Clouded-yellow & pale clouded-yellow by Humphreys 1841
This original hand-coloured lithograph is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood. Published in London 1841.
The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:
1. Colias Edusa (the clouded-yellow Butterfly), the male. 2. The female. 3. The Caterpillar. 4. The Chrysalis. 5. Colias Hyale (the pale clouded-yellow B., ) the male. 6. The female. 7. The Caterpillar. 8. The pale female variety of C, Edusa, 9. Sylibum Marianum (Milk-thistle). 10. Festuca gigantea (Giant fescue grass).
Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
