This original hand-coloured lithograph is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood. Published in London 1841.

The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:

1. Colias Chrysotheme ? (small clouded-yellow Butterfly), the male. 2. The female. 3. The underside. 4. Colias Europome ? (the clouded sulphur B.) 5, Female. 6. The underside. 7. Lotus corniculatus (common bird’s-foot trefoil). 8. Lotus major (great bird’s-foot trefoil)

Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
