Garden whites by Humphreys 1841
This original hand-coloured lithograph is from British Butterflies and their Transformations, arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys, with descriptions by J. O. Westwood. Published in London 1841.
The print illustrates the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:
1. Pieris Brassice (the large garden white Butterfly), male. 2. The female. 3. The male, showing the under side. 4. The Caterpillar. 5, The Chrysalis. 6. Pieris Chariclea (the early large garden white B.) male. 7. The female, showing the under side. 8. The Caterpillar. 9. The Chrysalis. 10. Brassica oleracea (Sea Cabbage). 11. Tropzolum majus. 12. Tropxolum peregrinum.
Henry Noel Humphreys (1810–1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
