Rare - Sparrow Hawk by Peter Mazell 1766
This rare hand coloured copperplate engraving is from The British Zoology by Thomas Pennant (1726-1798). Published by J. and J. March, London: 1761-1766. Thomas Pennant’s renowned natural history book The British Zoology is mentioned in the writings of Charles Darwin. He was a Welsh naturalist and travel writer, achieving distinction in both fields. As a zoologist, he participated in the Transactions of the British Royal Society, corresponding with leading scientists of his day such as Linnaeus. Drawn and engraved by Peter Mazell after a painting by Peter Paillou. Size: 14in x 20.5in (36cm x 52cm)
