2 Moth prints by Edward Donovan 1797
These copperplate engravings of 1. Red Underwing Moth – Phalaena Nupta and 2. Bind-weed Hawk Moth – Sphinx Convulvuli are from Edward Donovan’s The Natural History of British Insects Vol VIII, published in 1799 in London and printed by F & C Rivington. Edward Donovan was an amateur naturalist. Born in Cork, Ireland, Donovan was the founder of the London Museum and Institute of Natural History, which contained his extensive natural history collection. This work is highly rated for the artistry and composition of its prints, please note the beauty and intensity of the fine hand-colouring. The condition of these prints is excellent for a work that is over 225 years old. Size: 5.5in x 9in (14cm x 23cm)
