Charles Bree - 3 prints of Woodpeckers from Birds of Europe 1866
These hand-coloured wood engravings are from the History of the Birds of Europe, not observed in the British Isles by Charles Robert Bree, FZS and published by Groombridge and Sons, London. 1866, first edition.
The birds listed here are: Grey Woodpecker, Middle Spotted Woodpecker & White-rumped Woodpecker.
The plates were executed by Benjamin Fawcett, whose early chromoxylographs (colour-printed wood engravings) were actually finished by hand, some almost entirely hand-coloured (though the plates of eggs were colour-printed, but also finished by hand). Fawcett’s later works in the 1870s and 80s are almost entirely colour-printed, so Bree’s History of the Birds of Europe represents one of his earlier experimentations with colour printing.
Size: 5.5in x 9.5in (13cm x 23cm)
