These hand-coloured engravings are from William Swainson’s Birds of Western Africa from The Naturalist’s Library series edited by Sir William Jardine, Bart. Published by WH Lizars of Edinburgh 1837.
The birds illustrated here are Broad-shafted Whidah-Finch, Red-billed Whidah, Crimson-crowned Weaver & Yellow-bellied or Cape Bunting .
Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist’s Library (1833-1843).This work was published in two parts, being Volumes XI & XII of the Naturalist’s Library series.
