These hand-coloured engravings of the eggs of birds of prey are from the Coloured Illustrations of the Eggs of British Birds accompanied with descriptions of the Eggs and Nests by William C Hewitson, published by Jan Van Voorst, London, 1856.
The prints show the eggs of: Griffon Vulture or Vultur Fulvus; Egyptian Vulture – Vultur Percnopterus; Golden Eagle or Aquila Chrysaeta; Golden Eagle and Sea Eagle or Haliaeus Albicilla.
William Chapman Hewitson was a British naturalist, born on 9 January 1806 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A wealthy collector, Hewitson was particularly devoted to the Coleoptera and the Lepidoptera and also to bird’s nests and eggs. He was also an accomplished scientific illustrator.
