These hand-coloured engravings of the eggs of the owl family are from the Coloured Illustrations of the Eggs of British Birds accompanied with descriptions of the Eggs and Nests by William C Hewitson, published by Jan Van Voorst, London, 1856.

The prints show the eggs of:Tawny Owl; Snowy Owl & Hawk OwlScops Eared Owl, Tengmalm’s Owl & Little OwlLong Eared Owl, Short Eared Owl, Barn Owl & Eagle Owl.

William Chapman Hewitson was a British naturalist, born on 9 January 1806 in Newcastle upon Tyne. A wealthy collector, Hewitson was particularly devoted to the Coleoptera and the Lepidoptera and also to bird’s nests and eggs. He was also an accomplished scientific illustrator.
