These original antique woodblock hand-coloured prints are from History of the Fishes of the British Islands by Jonathan Couch. Published in 1877. This work is regarded as one of the fundamental contributions to British ichthyology.
The woodblocks were prepared by AF Lydon and Benjamin Fawcett printed the plates. Local artists from Polperro in Cornwall finished the colouring by hand. Jonathan Couch was born in1789. On completion of his medical studies, he returned to Cornwall where he settled for the remainder of his life, combining his skill and practice as a physician with his passion for natural history.
