This beautiful copper engraving with original hand colouring is from The Naturalist’s Miscellany by George Shaw and illustrated by Frederick P Nodder. Published in London 1790-1813.
Shaw published The Naturalist’s Miscellany, an extensive compendium of the birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, fishes, crustacean and sea marine life in and around Australia and New Zealand during 18th century expeditions. Frederick Polydore Nodder was a British natural history artist who illustrated both plants and animals. The Naturalist’s Miscellany was published in 287 monthly parts over some 24 years and describes zoological subjects, many new to science, and native to the South Pacific and Australia.
