These original hand-coloured lithographs, arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys with descriptions by J. O. Westwood, are from British Butterflies and their Transformations, published in London 1841.
The prints illustrate the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:1. Vanessa Io (the Peacock Butterfly). 2. Showing the under side. 3. Henry Noel Humphreys (1810-1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
