These original hand-coloured lithographs, arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys with descriptions by J. O. Westwood, are from British Butterflies and their Transformations, published in London 1841.
The prints illustrate the following butterfly species, including their caterpillar and chrysalis, and featured plants:1. Hipparchia Briseis, female. 2. Showing the under side. 3. Lotus corniculatus (common bird-foot trefoil). 8. Lotus major (great bird-foot trefoil1, Parnassius Apollo (the Apollo or crimson-ringed Butterfly). 2. Showing the underside. 3. The Caterpillar. 4. Henry Noel Humphreys (1810-1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist. Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
