These original hand-coloured lithographs are from British Moths and their Transformations, arranged and illustrated by H.N. Humphreys with descriptions by J. O. Westwood. Published by William Smith in London 1857.
These prints illustrate various moth species, including some of their caterpillar and chrysalis, and the flowers and plants they inhabit. Henry Noel Humphreys (1810-1879), was a British illustrator, naturalist, entomologist, and numismatist.
Humphreys, who studied medieval manuscripts in Italy as a young man, became an accomplished scholar in numerous subjects.
