These rare plates are from Curtis’s Botanical Magazine drawn by William J Hooker and engraved by Joseph Swan. Published by S Curtis Walworth 1830.
The plates are known for their fine detail and delicate hand colouring. The prints are all copperplate engravings, printed in colour finished by hand and this lot comprises:1. No. 2960 – Doubtful Desmodium 2. No. 3010 – Coloured-spiked Phrynium 3. No. 3026 – Stone Saxifrage 4. No. 3035 – Orange-flowered Poppy.
Curtis’s Botanical Magazine was founded by William Curtis in 1787 and is still being published to this day. it is the oldest periodical in existence featuring coloured plates, of which more than 11,000 have now been produced. The work of many acclaimed botanical artists such as James Sowerby, Sydenham Edwards, William Kilburn and William J Hooker.
