These beautifully hand-coloured engraved plates are from Glig-Gamena Angel-Deod, or, The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England by Joseph Strutt. Published by T. Bensley & J. White, London 1801.

In 1801, the British engraver and writer Joseph Strutt published a compendium to showcase some of the bizarre, bygone pastimes of England. Recognized as the first major scholarly effort in English to chronicle games and sports, Glig-Gamena Angel-Deod, Or, The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England proved very popular at the time.

Strutt, antiquarian and skilled engraver, culled many of his descriptions and images from medieval manuscripts and early printed books to produce his extremely popular history of sports.
