These hand-coloured engravings of Humming Birds are from The Natural History of Humming Birds Part 2 of The Naturalist’s Library by Sir William Jardine, Bart and engraved by WH Lizars, Edinburgh 1833. These engraving are from the first edition.

The humming birds illustrated are Gould’s Hummingbird, Golden-green Hummingbird, Violet Forked-tailed Hummingbird & White-eared Hummingbird.

Jardine made natural history available to all levels of Victorian society by editing and issuing the hugely popular forty volumes of The Naturalist’s Library (1833-1843).The Natural History of Humming Birds was issued in two parts, being Volumes VI & VII of The Naturalist?s Library series. Many of the hummingbirds illustrated in this work were of life size.

Each print measures approximately 4in x 6.5in (10cm x 15.5cm)
